Acclimating Your Fish? You might hear the advice to float the fish bag in the aquarium before releasing but their is much more to this. Over the years I’ve found the easiest way to explain this; Imagine taking someone living in the frosty North Pole and instantly placing them in a scorching hot desert. The shock would almost kill them! Well this is what acclimatizing fish is for, to minimize shock. This process is for not only for temperature but for a range of things that can shock fish. pH, GH, KH and Nitrate level changes can also shock fish. Keep in mind some species are more susceptible to changes than others and different lengths of acclimatization must be used. The basic guide to acclimatize fish: 1. Keep bag sealed and float on top of aquarium for 10 minutes 2. Open bag and add in 5-10ml of aquarium water leave for 5min 3. Repeat step 2-4 times (more for sensitive fish) 4. Carefully add fish to aquarium making sure to not add water from the fish bag. For adding more delicate species or to make life easier you can use airline tubing with a knot inline. This reduces the water to a slow drip which can be left in the bag for 10min or 1 hour. Thank you for reading
