First of all No, We can’t import Nishigikoi from Japan and some states of Australia declare them as noxious (illegal to possess). The WA koi breeders have managed to continue the Japanese lines from what fish were brought in pre-ban. Back in Japan you have separate breeders specializing in and perfecting the many colour patterns. Surprisingly enough most koi are sold/auctioned to brokers who then on sell to wholesalers or clients. The brokers will track down what koi farm has the desired pattern and negotiate with the farm. Some koi keepers are lucky enough to visit farms personally, this usually takes place for larger/rare koi. Koi are generally sold from farms as Tosai (one year olds) and some breeders boast their jumbo tosai lines (larger sized one year olds). Because of the sheer volume of Fry within a single spawn the genetic dice gets rolled. Constantly from the moment colour is visible Japanese koi farms will begin to cull. As certain koi patterns develop over time, many farmers can be reluctant to sell and huge sums of money can exchange hands. Anyone else keep koi? What’s your favorite colour pattern?
