Damn dreaded GHA (green hair algae). Been giving me the shits since starting my big tank in January. Just done a 4 day lights out to try waste it out. Parameters not to bad. Maybe a little high on phosphates. But then im getting false readings with it in there anyways. Will update when i finally turn lights back on and test water parameters again.

You’re not alone in trying to remove green hair algae. I found before and after photos of my efforts. I ended up using a combination of manual removing, starving lights/nutrients and phosban + bio pellet reactor. Plus I added a crew of 50 Trochus, 50 hermit crabs and about 30 pin cushion urchins. As you can see after I lost a lot of coralline algae from the rocks but did win that battle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah not keen on having tuxedo urchins in there. I guess one wouldnt harm it. Have you got many nic?
Either that or im going to have to start dosing hydrogen peroxide

I had to give a lot of the urchins away, they eat the coralline like crazy and made the rock look like limestone haha is the ones that remained became food for the shark.
I used to setup a syphon hose through a strainer into a bucket. Then just rip off the rocks and vacuum it up. Recycling the water so you don’t go through your IBC too quick.
What hours light schedule are you on now? What’s NO4/PO4 sitting at?

Ill do my tests again tonight.
Po4 was a little high but not drastic. And being there is gha consuming it, id say im getting false readings. No3 was near zero.
I done a 100ltr water change last night with a toothbrush syphoning of gha. Still heaps to go.

Think the hydrogen peroxide is working. Dosing 10ml a day to the tank. Plus phosphate remover. 2 days ago phospates were at 0.024ppm But thats a false reading somewhat. With the GHA consuming phosphates as well. The GHA seems to be going black. So think its dying.

Are you still restricting light hours? How’s all the corals handling the treatments?
