Freshwater Angelfish Pterophyllum scalare
A south American cichlid species that is extremely popular in the aquarium hobby. Their long fins, thin body, colourful scales and larger size sets them apart as a main feature of the tank. They can be added to community aquariums by introducing them at a smaller size, they do however keep the aggressiveness of cichlids. They will quickly eat any smaller fish and can get aggressive when pairing off to breed.
Breeding will start with a female cleaning an area to spawn, her egg tube will drop and the fish make passes over the spawning location depositing sticky eggs. The breeding area should be on a 45 degree angel to assist with breeding, slate stone works great. Once the eggs are laid some parents can unfortunately eat the eggs but they do eat any non fertilized or fungus eggs. With age the spawn size and care will increase.
Size: up to 15cm, 20cm with some varieties fins Tank Size: 80-100 Liters minimum
Temperature: 22-30°C pH: 6.4-7.8 Water hardness: 5°-13° dH
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive to Aggressive (community with care and at smaller size is possible)
Food: Should be fed a mixture of pellets, flake foods and frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp or community mix) Native Distribution: South America/Amazon River

I’ll also add they are extremely “Owner interactive”. I will be harassed by them trying to get my attention for food the moment the fish room door opens 😂
They are very fun to keep.

I have a whole box of different brand flaked, crisp and granulated foods (mainly Sera, New Life Spectrum, Fluval, Tetra and API) frozen bloodworms, brineshrimp, krill, beef heart and prawn from Ocean Nutrition... And my favourite method of feeding them, with the Tetra treat sachets of bloodworms, krill and brineshrimp!! It makes feeding time much more personal and they love seeing the bright orange packet come closer to the surface! Not to mention all the algae discs that get thrown in for the bristlenose and clown loaches...
